Why It’s Important to Have Vision for Your Life and Business

This may not be a conventional post, but it’s something that’s been on my heart for a little while now.  As a business owner for the past 4.5 years, I’ve come to realize how important it is to have vision for not only your business, but for your life.

So, What Exactly IS Vision?

Most people would probably insert a definition from the dictionary here, but I’m not most people, and I don’t want to just relay the definition here. The goal of this post is to help you really understand what vision is.

I myself have heard the term “vision” a lot in the last 20 or so years. As the administrative assistant for my church, I hear the term often. But I’ve never really begun to grasp what it really means to have vision for something until very recently.

To me, vision is being able to SEE the end result of your dreams and goals, or of a project. So for example, our house needs a lot of work and I would love to do some remodeling. I can envision what my house would look like when we have the money to do the work needed and desired. I have vision for my home.

Another example is for my Avon business. This area of my life is where I really began to understand what vision is and what it’s like to have vision for something! My vision for my Avon business is to be at the top….a National Senior Executive Unit Leader! I can see myself earning big checks, leading a huge team and helping others get what they want from their businesses as well. I can also see myself living our dream life and being able to help others to do so also. But I am definitely not there yet, and I know I have a lot to learn and a lot to change within myself in order to make my vision, my dreams, become reality.

How to Make Your Vision Become Reality Vision

As I said above, I have a lot to learn and to change within myself in order to make my vision become reality. Some of those things include learning more about leadership, managing my finances better, being better organized, stepping out of my comfort zone more, prioritizing tasks, and much more.

But before I realized what I need to do and change, I had to SEE myself in the position I want. In addition, I have to continually SEE myself in that position or the vision could fade. So, the first thing you need to do is to think about where you want to be in your business and your life. Then close your eyes and imagine yourself in that position. Imagine you’re leading a team of representatives all over the country. What would that look like? How would you do manage it? If you don’t know how, don’t worry…then you know those are the areas you need to work on. This is where goal setting comes in. If there’s an area you need more training in or need help with, make it your goal to get it. Perhaps you need better social networking skills. Find someone who is where you want to be in the same business, or at least on the way there, and make them your mentor. Learn from them. Learn what they do every day to grow their business and how they do it. I’m sure that anyone of the top leaders in any business got there because they’ve helped other people get there and they will help you also!

Another thing you can do to help your vision not fade is to create your dream board. If your goal is, for example, National Senior Executive Unit Leader with Avon, you could put that at as the main focus of your dream board, and then post pictures of how you imagine it to be. Maybe even post pictures of your mentors that are already there or are well on their way. You could also post pictures of what kind of income you’ll have and what that will mean for you and your family.

If you’re like me, perhaps National Senior Executive Unit Leader is too hard to imagine right now under your circumstances. Or you have no idea how to have vision or how to visualize your life any different than where it is right now. That’s okay. Just start somewhere. If you’re just starting out, visualize yourself at the next level. What could an extra $100 or $200 a month do for your family? Is there a bill you could pay off or a special something that you’ve been wanting or needing? Visualize what that would feel and look like.

Keep Your Vision in Front of You

One you get a vision for your life or business, or even ministry, keep it in front of you at all times. This is very important, especially when times get tough! And believe me, they will!!! But when you have that vision in front of you, it will help you push through and not give up!!!
